Great passions in life
"- Two of my great passions in life are travel and photography. I believe that travel broadens one's view of the world. Experiencing other cultures, meeting people from other communities and other countries and seeing the beauty, and sometimes ugliness, of the world has helped me understand that all of our lives are at once interconnected and individual."
The greatest show on earth
"- It is so unforgetable to feel the low round pink sun, inhale the warm, dry air, listen to the unsettled rumble of the greatest show on earth. Sleeping camels, slow water buffalos, donkeys, goats, skinny cows - rickshaws, mopeds, buses, trucks, cycles. In India, the streets are alive. In half a minute, half a million stories rush by - woman in purple sitting on the ground, loud Hindi billboards, burning trash." It is impossible not to be astonished by India. Nowhere on Earth does humanity present itself in such a dizzying, creative burst of cultures and religions, races and tongues. Every aspect of the country presents itself on a massive, exaggerated scale, worthy in comparison only to the superlative mountains that overshadow it. Perhaps the only thing more difficult than to be indifferent to India would be to describe or understand India completely. The decisive moment is that the best photo opportunities often flash before our eyes and we must be ready at all times to capture those moments. That means bringing around your camera everywhere you go. Street photography is built on the mundane and ordinary moments, so any moment is a potential for a great photograph.
Slides of India, pictures and photo essays from India
He embarked upon a series of trips to far-flung locations, camera always in hand, which resulted in an ever growing library of slides. Slides of daily life, not just in Delhi, but across India, in four different states, to finally bring a view on the human conditions. In the west, Rajasthan is the home to the great Indian desert, the Thar. The Rajputs, the warrior-kings who ruled here built fortified cities, Jaipur of ochre- sandstone, which remain intact even today. The famous Hawa-Mahal, the Palace of the Wind, and the Lake Palace have been converted to hotels.
Population in highrising growth
India's population is likely to surpass that of China, the most populous country in the world, by 2030. The government has been trying to get the population under control but is yet to really succeed. Kristian Bertel's photographic work, with more than 400 photos from India, can be seen as slideshows on his website. Kristian has depicted his journey in carefully selected series of photographs.
